To see or not to see

Quarantine life has made digital tv one of the most popular pastime. Just like everyone else I decided to catch up. Different characters tell different stories not only by acting but even by the way they dress.

The recent indian series on digital platforms, most of the main characters are supposed to look sexy or very straight laced but there is no in between. Characters have layers , straight hair doesnt mean innocent nor curly hair wild.  One has to remember that the way they carry themselves and clothes they wear is a direct representation for what they do and who they work for.

I feel media either shows work wear as boring or sexy and nothing in between. The art of being comfortable in ones own skin often comes only when we are true to ourselves. Whether it’s the bling that makes us feel glamorous or the ethnic prints which bring forth are cultural preferences.

Television has the most reach and alot of style inspiration on the streets is ‘as seen on tv’. I have been watching indian and us shows, somehow walking down streets of New York in Manholo Blahniks is far more believable than doing housework in decked up kanjeevarams and 22 karat gold sets.  Even the sitcoms set in Bombay dont seem to have taken inspiration from the street trends or even the glitterati of the commercial capital.  So much for me criticizing , now let’s look at what actually works for us in real life if serious inspiration is taken :
1. A great pair of shoes can take up your look several notches.

2. Always have a personal touch to any look so it will always be your signature style statement.

3. Over accessorizing can kill the outfit.

4. Work wear is not limited to suits and black pants.

5. Bling can be worn in the day as well just have to know how to tone it down.
6. Subtle eye make up always goes with any outfit day or night.
7. Sarees are more versatile and can be draped in various ways to suit your personality.
8. Hairstyles can completely change your style.
9. Confidence can make any outfit rock .
Thus, each character is dressed as what it’s supposed to be its core purpose to the sitcom. We ape the styles and looks, but following trends blindly is the biggest mistake. Our bodies, personalities,  life style are  completely different though they may make us look trendy but could also back fire.

My knowledge of Manholo Blahniks was thanks to Sex and the City but I also know how much Headbands were a fad due to Gossip Girl. Whereas big earrings and big bindis were a trend in India thanks to all the Ekta Kapoor Serials a.k.a the bigger the bindi , more evil the vamp. Recent times,  Four More Shots probably inspired the lob as the trendy hairstyle.

Thus, Rachel’s ( Friends)  character started the layer haircuts and Mr.Bajaj ( Kasauti Zindagi Kay) got the salt and pepper hair in trend.  So these characters were epitomized for the style quotient and even with the whole Nagin wave, bustiers and belly chains might be the upcoming trend.
Thus , translating styles is difficult but encompassing them as a part of ones look will make it better. So, inspiration is way better than imitation.
